Shipping Shisha Charcoal to Iraq via Aqaba in 2026

If you import shisha charcoal into Iraq, you have probably noticed that the way containers reach the country has changed this year. Since the Strait of Hormuz became unreliable for commercial shipping, many Iraq-bound containers no longer sail up the Gulf to the south. Instead they go by sea to Aqaba in Jordan and continue by road. Local press in Najaf reported on 27 October 2026 that some shisha charcoal brands had become hard to find and that wholesalers were limiting how much each buyer could take, with some shipments now arriving through Jordan.
This guide explains, in plain language, how an Indonesian shisha charcoal container travels to Iraq through Aqaba, which documents your clearing agent will need, and how to plan your order so your lounges and customers are not left short. We ship to Iraq this way ourselves, so the route below is the one we actually use.
Why Iraq-Bound Charcoal Now Goes Through Aqaba
For years, containers for Iraq were discharged at the Gulf ports near Basra. Since late February 2026, security risks around the Strait of Hormuz have sharply reduced commercial traffic, and many carriers have stopped calling at Gulf ports in the normal way. Traders have looked for another door into Iraq, and Aqaba, Jordan’s Red Sea port, has become one of the main ones.
The numbers show how fast the shift happened. The Jordan Shipping Association reported that transit containers bound for Iraq through Aqaba rose from about 3,600 in the first seven months of 2025 to about 37,200 in the same period of 2026. Port officials have said the containers are unloaded at Aqaba and then trucked to Iraq, roughly 760 kilometres to the east.
The same disruption has changed routes into the Gulf as well. If you also supply the UAE, see our guide to shipping shisha charcoal to the UAE in 2026.
For buyers of shisha charcoal, this has two effects. Aqaba and the road to the border are busier than before, so planning matters more. And because coconut shell charcoal is dangerous goods cargo, your paperwork has to be right before the container is booked, not after it arrives.
The Route: Aqaba, Trebil and Umm Qasr
Here is how an Iraq-bound container from our factory travels.
- Factory to Semarang. The container is packed and loaded in Indonesia, and our standard port of loading is Semarang (FOB Semarang).
- By sea to Aqaba (Jordan). The container sails to Aqaba on the Red Sea, where it is discharged.
- By inland truck to Trebil. The cargo is trucked across Jordan to Trebil, the Iraq–Jordan border crossing, where customs clearance takes place.
- On to Umm Qasr. From there the cargo continues to Umm Qasr and onward to the buyer’s warehouse.
Each leg has a different party in charge: the shipping line at sea, a Jordanian transit or trucking company in Jordan, and your Iraqi clearing agent at the border and beyond. The smoothest shipments are the ones where everyone received the same, correct documents before the vessel sailed.
What Your Importer and Clearing Agent Should Prepare
Your clearing agent is the most important partner on the Iraqi side. Ask them early which documents they want in which format, because requirements can change and are different from port to port. As a starting point, a typical set for a shisha charcoal container includes the items below. Our guide to the documents needed when importing charcoal from Indonesia explains each one in more detail.
- Commercial invoice and packing list, with product names, quantities and weights that match each other exactly
- Bill of lading (B/L), where all our products are declared as “Coconut shell charcoal briquettes”
- Certificate of origin, showing Indonesian origin
- MSDS (safety data sheet), which is available and provided with the shipment
- HS code 4402.20.10 for coconut shell charcoal, the same code we use for all our products
- Lab report, for your records and your own quality checks. Our Sucofindo Certificate of Analysis (No. E01021/COBHAT, 2 March 2026) can be used as the quality certificate for our shisha grades
Keep the product description identical on every document. A small difference between the invoice, the packing list and the B/L is one of the most common reasons for questions at the border.
Customs rules, duties and import conditions in Iraq can change, and they are decided by Iraqi authorities. This article is general information, not legal or customs advice. Please confirm current requirements, including any duties and taxes, with your Iraqi clearing agent before you order.
UN 1361 Paperwork for Shisha Charcoal
Since 1 January 2026, charcoal ships as dangerous goods under UN 1361, and carriers apply their strictest checks to this cargo. This matters for Iraq-bound containers because the dangerous goods paperwork has to be correct before the carrier will accept the booking. Our article on what UN 1361 means for coconut charcoal covers the background. In short, the conditions under IMDG Amendment 42-24 (Special Provision 978) include:
- Charcoal that is properly conditioned (weathered) before packing
- A temperature of no more than 40°C at the time of packing
- About 30 cm of headspace left at the top of the container
- Dangerous goods declaration and the supporting certificates your carrier asks for
Our Sucofindo self-heating test (No. E01003/COBHAT, 2 March 2026) found the product is not Class 4.2, but carriers still book it as UN 1361 cargo, so the declaration and the container packing records are still required. Ask your forwarder which carrier will move the container and what that carrier needs for Aqaba. Carrier rules for dangerous goods change often, so confirm them for the week you book.
Planning Your Order Timeline
Good timing starts with understanding what each stage adds. Our production lead time is 28 to 35 days, counted from the deposit and artwork approval. After that comes sea transit to Aqaba, then discharge, trucking across Jordan, and clearance at Trebil.
We do not quote fixed transit days for the sea leg or the road leg, because they depend on the carrier, the vessel schedule, congestion at Aqaba and the border, and your clearing agent’s speed. Ask your forwarder for the current estimate when you book, and add a safety margin. If you sell to lounges, think about the order you would place if you wanted stock on your shelves two to three months from today, and work backwards from there.
Payment terms are simple. We ask for a 50% deposit, with the balance due 5 days before container loading by T/T, or an irrevocable L/C at sight. Under our standard FOB Semarang basis, your forwarder books the main freight. If you would like us to discuss a different shipping term, tell us in your enquiry. Our guide to FOB, CIF and what they mean for your charcoal import helps you decide.
Choosing Your Container Plan
Our minimum order is 18 tons per 20ft container. A 20ft container carries one product type only. If you want to bring two types into Iraq at the same time, a 40ft container can carry two types at 13 tons each. This is useful for importers who supply both lounges that want a premium grade and wholesalers who want a more economical one, without needing two separate bookings.
| Container | Product mix | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| 20ft | One product type only | 18 tons (MOQ) |
| 40ft | Up to two product types | 13 tons each |
Our factory produces about 8 to 10 tons per day, so a regular plan with a booked production slot works better than a last-minute order, especially when freight is tight.
Why Quality Matters So Much to Iraqi Lounges
The same Najaf report described customers who ask which charcoal a cafe uses before they sit down, and some who leave if the coals burn quickly or give off more fumes. That matches what many Iraqi importers tell us: lounge guests notice the coals. Our guide to premium shisha charcoal for the Iraqi market explains why strong, consistent charcoal suits hot, busy lounges.
What matters most is simple to check:
- Low ash. Our Diamond grade has 1.6–2% ash, which means cleaner burning and less ash in the bowl.
- Low moisture. Moisture is under 6%, so the coals light evenly and burn steadily.
- Calorific value. Diamond is about 8,000 kcal/kg, which supports a long, steady burn.
- Uniform, deep-black cubes. A box where every cube looks the same is a good sign of consistent raw material and pressing.
- 100% coconut shell. Our shells typically come from Sumatra or Sulawesi, with no wood or fillers mixed in.
Test a Sample Before Your First Container
When freight is complicated, the cost of a wrong first order is higher. A free sample lets you check ignition, burn time and ash with your own bowls and your own tobacco before you commit. Our step-by-step guide on how to test shisha charcoal samples shows a simple side-by-side test you can do in an afternoon.
Samples are free. You only pay the courier cost, by bank transfer to our company account. We do not accept PayPal. Please send us your full delivery address and phone number so we can arrange the courier.
A Short Checklist for Iraqi Importers
- Speak to your clearing agent first and ask for their document list for UN 1361 charcoal
- Confirm current Iraqi customs and duty rules with your agent, not from this article
- Request and test a sample, and keep a reference box from it
- Decide your container plan: 20ft with one product, or 40ft with two at 13 tons each
- Work back from your stock date: production, sea freight to Aqaba, trucking and clearance
- Keep product names, weights and HS code 4402.20.10 identical on every document
- Ask your forwarder for current Aqaba and Trebil timing before you pay the balance
