Shipping Terms Explained: FOB, CIF, and What They Mean for Your Charcoal Import

Shipping Terms Explained: FOB, CIF, and What They Mean for Your Charcoal Import

If you’ve ever received a price quote from a charcoal supplier and seen the letters “FOB” or “CIF” next to the number, you’re not alone in wondering what they actually mean — and more importantly, what they mean for your bottom line.

Shipping terms aren’t just logistics jargon. They determine who pays for what, who carries the risk when something goes wrong, and ultimately how much your charcoal actually costs when it lands at your door. Getting this wrong can turn a competitive price into an expensive surprise.

Let’s break it down in plain language.

What Is FOB?

FOB stands for Free On Board. When a supplier quotes you a price FOB, it means their responsibility ends the moment your cargo is loaded onto the ship at the origin port — in our case, a port here in Indonesia.

From that point on, everything is on you: ocean freight, marine insurance, destination port charges, customs clearance, and inland delivery to your warehouse. The risk of loss or damage also transfers to you once the goods are on board.

What this looks like in practice:

You receive a quote of $X per ton, FOB Semarang. That means the price includes the charcoal, packaging, and getting it loaded onto the vessel at Semarang port. What it does not include is the cost of actually sailing it to your country, insuring it, clearing it through customs, or delivering it to your warehouse.

Who FOB works best for:

FOB is typically preferred by experienced importers who already have relationships with freight forwarders, know their local import costs well, and want full control over the shipping process. If you know exactly what your freight and customs costs look like, FOB lets you shop around for the best rates independently and keeps things clean and transparent on the supplier side.

What Is CIF?

CIF stands for Cost, Insurance, and Freight. When a supplier quotes you CIF, they are covering three things in the price: the cost of the goods, the marine insurance, and the freight to get it to your destination port.

Under CIF, the supplier arranges and pays for shipping and insurance on your behalf. Your responsibility kicks in once the cargo arrives at your destination port — from there, customs clearance, import duties, and inland delivery are still on you.

What this looks like in practice:

You receive a quote of $Y per ton, CIF Rotterdam. That price includes the charcoal, packaging, ocean freight from Indonesia to Rotterdam, and basic marine insurance. When it arrives at Rotterdam port, you take over — handling customs, duties, and getting it to your warehouse.

Who CIF works best for:

CIF is popular with buyers who are newer to importing, or who simply prefer a more hands-off arrangement on the shipping side. It reduces the number of parties you need to coordinate with and gives you a more all-in number to work with upfront. The trade-off is that you have less control over which shipping line is used and the insurance coverage may be minimal — just enough to meet the requirement, not necessarily enough to fully protect your cargo.

*Note: Under CIF, even though the supplier arranges freight and insurance, the risk technically transfers to the buyer once goods are loaded at origin — the same as FOB. This surprises many buyers. It means if something happens at sea, you make the insurance claim even under CIF.

One More Term Worth Knowing: EXW

While FOB and CIF are the two you’ll encounter most often in the charcoal trade, you may also come across EXW — Ex Works. This is the most bare-bones term of all: the supplier’s responsibility ends at their factory gate. You handle everything from there — including getting it to the port, loading it, shipping it, insuring it, and importing it. EXW gives you maximum control but also maximum responsibility. It’s rarely the right choice unless you have very strong logistics infrastructure in the supplier’s country.

Which Term Does Glowing Charcoal Indonesia Offer?

We offer both FOB and CIF depending on what works best for your business.

For clients who have established freight forwarders and want to keep shipping costs transparent and separately managed, we’re happy to quote FOB from our nearest export port. For clients who prefer a simpler, more consolidated arrangement — especially those newer to importing from Indonesia — we can quote CIF to your destination port.

Our minimum order quantity is 18 tons, and our production lead time is 25–30 days from order confirmation. Shipping time from Indonesia to the Middle East is typically 25-28 days, to Europe 28–35 days, and to the US East Coast around 25–30 days.

A Practical Tip Before You Commit

Whichever shipping term you choose, always make sure you understand the total landed cost — meaning the full cost of your charcoal from our factory floor to your warehouse shelf. This includes the product price, freight, insurance, port handling fees, customs duties, and inland delivery.

A FOB price that looks cheaper than a CIF price may actually cost more once you add your own freight and insurance. Conversely, a CIF price that looks higher may include services that save you time, coordination effort, and risk exposure.

When in doubt, ask your supplier to walk you through both options with estimated total costs. A transparent supplier will do this willingly. One that’s cagey about it is worth watching carefully.

At Glowing Charcoal Indonesia, we believe the best deals are the ones where both sides fully understand what’s included — no hidden costs, no unpleasant surprises at the destination port.
