Shisha Charcoal Stock Planning for Ramadan 2027: When to Order from Indonesia

For hookah lounges, shisha distributors and private-label brand owners in the Middle East, Ramadan is one of the busiest stretches of the year. Lounges stay open from iftar until suhoor, Ramadan tents fill up, and families buy more for evening gatherings at home. If your warehouse runs short in the middle of the month, there is no quick fix: a new container from Indonesia takes weeks to produce and weeks more at sea. This guide shows how to plan your shisha charcoal Ramadan stock for 2027 by working backwards from the expected start date, through sea transit and production, to the day you need to confirm your order.
When Does Ramadan 2027 Start?
Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday, 8 February 2027. Astronomical forecasts from the International Astronomical Center, UK moon-sighting reports and the Unified Global Hijri Calendar all point to that date, and timeanddate.com currently lists 8 February for most countries, with a few expected to start on 9 February. The final date in each country is still subject to the official moon sighting, so treat 7–9 February as the window.
Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9 or 10 March 2027, depending on whether the month lasts 29 or 30 days. Many distributors also want stock for the Eid holidays, so your plan should cover the whole period from late January to mid-March, not just the first week of fasting.
Why Ramadan Stock Needs an Early Order
Three things make the weeks before Ramadan 2027 tighter than a normal reorder cycle:
- Everyone orders at once. Distributors across the Gulf, the Levant, Iraq and North Africa all plan for the same season, so factory schedules and container bookings fill up in November and December.
- Year-end and Lunar New Year. Christmas and New Year reduce working days for carriers and forwarders, and Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. Cargo from Asia usually surges in January before that holiday, which can squeeze space on the mainline vessels that feeder services from Semarang connect to.
- Gulf shipping is still disrupted. Since March 2026, most mainline container services have avoided the Strait of Hormuz. Routes into the UAE, Saudi Arabia’s east coast, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Iraq now often involve an extra land or feeder leg, which adds time and makes schedules less predictable. We first wrote about this in our update on the Strait of Hormuz closure and shipping to Gulf countries; the routings described below reflect how carriers have adapted since then.
The practical answer is simple: plan in November, not in January.
Sea Transit Times from Semarang to Key Middle East Ports
We load at Tanjung Emas port in Semarang, Central Java (FOB Semarang). Most Middle East cargo is transhipped at a hub such as Singapore or Tanjung Pelepas, so the total time depends on the carrier, the connection and the routing in force when you book. The ranges below are approximate planning figures based on published carrier schedules, freight platform data and forwarder guidance checked in late October 2026. They are not guarantees: always confirm the current routing and transit time with your forwarder before you fix dates.
| Destination | Approximate planning range from Semarang | Notes (late October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Jeddah / King Abdullah Port (Saudi Red Sea coast) | About 3–5 weeks | Does not depend on the Strait of Hormuz, although Jeddah is busier than usual as a transit hub. |
| Dubai / Jebel Ali (UAE) | About 5–7 weeks | Normally 2–4 weeks, but cargo from Indonesia currently moves only via Jeddah, then on to the UAE. Allow the Jeddah transit plus the onward leg, and confirm the onward leg with your forwarder. |
| Dammam / Jubail (Saudi east coast) | About 5–7 weeks | Often routed via Jeddah with an overland leg, or planned case by case. |
| Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Umm Qasr (Iraq) | About 6–8 weeks or more | Routed with an extra overland or feeder leg, planned case by case with your forwarder. Some Iraqi buyers route via Aqaba instead. |
| Aqaba (Jordan) | About 4–6 weeks | Via the Red Sea. |
| Beirut (Lebanon) / Latakia (Syria) | About 5–6 weeks | Via Suez and an Eastern Mediterranean connection. |
Dangerous goods acceptance matters as much as transit time
Charcoal ships as dangerous goods under UN 1361 (Class 4.2). Since the Gulf disruption, carriers have published separate rules for dangerous goods, and at least one major carrier’s Middle East update in October 2026 still listed dangerous-goods bookings to several Gulf destinations as suspended. Acceptance changes from week to week and differs between carriers. Before you pay a deposit, ask your forwarder to confirm that a named carrier will accept UN 1361 cargo to your port on the routing you want, and which emergency or transit surcharges apply. We check the same with our forwarders on the FOB side.
Working Backwards: Your Ramadan 2027 Order Timeline
Here is the chain we use with buyers, starting from the expected first day of Ramadan and moving back to the deposit date. Our production lead time is 28–35 days from receipt of the deposit, and the balance is due 5 days before the container is loaded.
| Milestone | Target date |
|---|---|
| Ramadan expected to begin (moon sighting) | Mon 8 February 2027 |
| Stock cleared and in your warehouse, ready to deliver to lounges and shops | About 18–25 January 2027 |
| Container discharged at destination port (allow about a week for clearance and delivery, longer where a land bridge or feeder is involved) | About 11–15 January 2027 |
| Container loaded at Semarang (depends on your route, see table above) | Mid-November to mid-December 2026 |
| Balance payment by T/T | 5 days before loading |
| Deposit paid, specification and packaging artwork final (production 28–35 days) | Late October to mid-November 2026 |
Example: a distributor in Dubai
Cargo for Dubai is currently routed via Jeddah, then on to the UAE, so plan on about seven weeks from Semarang to a warehouse in Dubai and confirm the onward leg with your forwarder. To have stock cleared by around 20 January, the container should load in Semarang around the first days of December. Working back 28–35 days of production plus a few days for booking and documents, the deposit should be paid now, and no later than the first days of November.
Example: an importer in Jeddah
With about four weeks at sea, loading around mid-December still works for a mid-January arrival. That puts the deposit in early to mid-November, with a little room if your forwarder confirms a fast connection.
What “last call” really means
On the shortest routes, a deposit in early December 2026 is the last realistic point to receive Ramadan stock, and only if you accept arrival close to the start of the month and a smooth January shipping window. For buyers in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, Dammam, Lebanon or Syria, waiting until December means the container will most likely arrive after Ramadan has begun, so on those routes the order should be confirmed now. Ordering earlier costs nothing in quality: coconut shell charcoal stored dry keeps well until the season starts.
How Much Stock to Order
Every market is different, so start from your own sales data rather than a rule of thumb:
- Take your normal monthly sales by cube size and pack format.
- Apply the Ramadan uplift you saw last year, and add the Eid period.
- Add a safety buffer for shipping delays, since a late container is the most common reason for empty shelves.
- Round up to full containers. Our MOQ is 18 tons per 20ft container, and each 20ft carries one product type. If you need two types, for example one for lounges and one for retail, order a 40ft container with 13 tons of each.
If you are holding more stock than usual, storage conditions matter. Keep cartons off the floor, away from damp walls and out of direct sun so the charcoal stays as dry as when it left the factory. Our guide on how to properly store charcoal briquettes in a warehouse covers stacking, ventilation and stock rotation.
Private Label Orders Need a Head Start
If the charcoal goes out under your own brand, the clock starts earlier. Printed inner boxes and master cartons can only be produced once your artwork is final, so send print-ready files and confirm sizes before you pay the deposit. A late change to artwork is one of the easiest ways to lose a week. Frequently Asked Questions
When should I order shisha charcoal for Ramadan 2027?
For most Middle East destinations, pay the deposit in November 2026. Buyers in Dubai, whose cargo now moves via Jeddah, should pay now or in the first days of November at the latest; Jeddah buyers have until around mid-November. Early December is the last call, and only for the shortest routes.
What date does Ramadan 2027 start?
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday, 8 February 2027, subject to the official moon sighting in each country. Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9 or 10 March 2027.
How long does shipping take from Semarang to the Middle East?
Roughly 3–5 weeks to Jeddah, 5–7 weeks to Dubai under current routings (via Jeddah, then on to the UAE), and 5–8 weeks or more to the Saudi east coast, the Upper Gulf, Iraq, Lebanon or Syria. These are planning ranges only; confirm the current transit time and carrier acceptance with your forwarder.
Can I mix different products in one container?
Not in a 20ft container. A 20ft (MOQ 18 tons) carries one product type only. If you need two types, choose a 40ft container, which can carry 2 types at 13 tons each. Tell us both types with your order so we can plan production in one run.
Can I test a sample before my Ramadan order?
Yes. Samples are free; you only pay the courier cost by bank transfer to our company account (we do not accept PayPal). Request your sample early so there is time to burn-test it before the deposit date.
